Catholic? Bon Jovi concert

We to the Bon Jovi concert (Circle Tour) at the (Bank Atlantic?) Sunrise Arena.  Opened with one of my favorite songs, Blood on Blood.  Also closed with an encore of Runaway, Wanted (Dead or Alive) and Livin on a Prayer.  Show was great!  Our nosebleed seats were eye level with the lighting catwalk, which may be why the audio was vocal audio was so hard to hear, but, otherwise, and great show!  I think their show last time in 2008 was better even through we were behind the stage.

Their newer songs seem to be more focused on social justice.  I know Bon Jovi is a big campaigner for Democrats (Gore, Kerry and Obama), but I was wondering if he’s still Catholic, especially since he sang Hallelujah solo for 5 minutes.

I found a quote from Parade magazine in 2007:

On his Catholic upbringing:
“I went to Catholic school in and out. I’m what you call a recovering Catholic. I have many major issues with the church.”Jon Bon Jovi

I know that was 3 years ago, but I hope and pray that his search for truth brings him back home to a faithful Catholic identity.  I also noticed Richie Sambora was wearing a St Benedict rosary around his neck.  I hope it wasn’t just a fashion statement.  I couldn’t find much about his faith background.

Another favorite Bon Jovi song is Keep the Faith.

My favorite part (usually cut off the radio version) is the part after the guitar solo (about 4 minutes) where he says:

I’ve been walking in the footsteps of society’s lies
I don’t like what I see no more
Sometimes I wish that I was blind
Sometimes I wait forever
To stand out in the rain
So no one sees me cryin’
Trying to wash away the pain

Mother father
There’s things I’ve done I can’t erase
Every night we fall from grace
It’s hard with the world in yours face
Trying to hold on, trying to hold on

Just to let you know, Richie is Catholic and the rosary beads were his grandmother’s. They are very special to him.

Richie Sambora is Catholic. He also has a tattoo of a cross on his left arm, with a sunrise behind it, and the words “God” and “Faith” above and below it. (Check out his solo songs “The Answer” and “One Light Burning”…. they’re beautiful songs about his faith.)

I know Jon was raised Catholic, but I don’t know if he still identifies himself as such.

He goes to Mass every week and holy days of obligation.

And Jon Bon Jovi has been following Mark Wahlberg’s lead of returning to the church and has been spotted at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in attendance and taking communion.

If he voted for Clinton and Obama that I think he is not catholic, because C and O were for “removing” unwanted, unborn child

that really makes no difference bc u can support someone and not support EVERYTHING that person supports

You cannot belong to the Roman Catholic Church and still support Obama because of his ObamaCare policies and his Culture of Death. Obama is trying to force our Holy Mother Church to opt-in to ObamaCare and commit mortal sin by doing so. I do not know why the Catholic politicians that support Obama have not been excommunicated. Some of them have been turned away from receiving the Holy Eucharist because they are not in a State of Grace.

Just read your quote…”if he voted for Clinton and Obama that I think he is not Catholic” what a narrow minded idiotic statement. I am a Catholic and I am a strong democrat. No party is perfect, but I try to follow Jesus in caring for the sick, poor and the ones who need help. This is basically the democratic party. The republicans say a good line but are not following Jesus. I am against abortion, but I am NOT a one issue person. ALL life is precious, even AFTER birth. We cannot ignore the plight of the needy after they are born, that covers healthcare for all, programs to help the need and elderly etc. None of which the republicans support. THey are the big business part. I am sick and tired of these so called Christians who say you have to vote for republicans if you are Catholic. Search your soul and see if you are just being driven by blind following or really following Christ.!!!!

Faith, I just reread your post and sorry that I misunderstood what you said. I thought you were referring to belonging to the Church and not about those two horrible politicians; however, Obama does promote the Culture of Death, so no good, devout Roman Catholic would ever consider supporting him, IMHO. Thanks and God bless all y’all.

i agree with what u are saying Startoy but back to Jon bonjovi is that he doesnt say that he is a catholic anymore..i dont even know what he believes nowadays

Thanks, Faith. Sorry that Jon is so confused. I left the Church for 45 years and thankfully I am back. I found that I could not stay away because of Our Lord giving us Himself, totally, in the Holy Eucharist and the Catholic priests are the only ones that were given the Power to do this for us. God bless you, Faith, and everyone, and our precious country.

“I have a hard time with organized religion. How is it that a baby can die at birth and under Catholicism he doesn’t go to heaven because he has original sin until he’s christened? How come if you go to confession, walk out the church and say God damn it! for some reason, then you get hit by a bus, no good, you go to hell? How come they won’t let women be priests? You got a priest makes his vows, he’s skimming money, he’s sleeping with little boys.
You go to mass three times a day, sing a song, put money in the plate, that’s supposed to absolve you of your sins?”
    -Jon Bon Jovi

“I’m a recovering Catholic. Daily. My whole head is completely f**ked with what you’re brought up to believe in. What is reality and is there reality and who’s to say that Judaism is not the right religion, or Buddhism, Catholicism…? What the f**k is right any more?”
    -Jon Bon Jovi

“It’s the worst. The f**kin’ worst. You know, who’s right, who’s wrong? Is the Bible all fiction or is it not fiction? Who the f**k is right about anything any more? I just feel you’ve got to do right by yourself and other people. But the idea that a kid is born and dies, and at birth he wasn’t christened, so he goes to hell? I don’t get it. I went to a Catholic school until they threw me out. My parents tried it again at high school. I begged them to let me out. I couldn’t handle it.”
    -Jon Bon Jovi

“I think I find more strength in faith than I do in organized religion. Livin’ On A Prayer is most certainly non-denominational.”
    -Jon Bon Jovi

Two of his songs that discuss religion directly are “Something To Believe In” and “Hey God.” Great, thoughtful songs.

About “Hallelujah,” Jon has said that in his mind, the song is sexual, not religious.
